Volunteering activities in English and opportunities to practice Finnish

We need new volunteers all the time and we are more than happy to have volunteers who speak some other languages than Finnish.

We have at the moment two volunteering groups that you can participate in English: First aid and Preparedness group and Catering group.

First aid and Preparedness group has trainings about first aid and other themes of Red Cross preparedness.

Meetings of the group are in Tampuri (Otavalankatu 12 A, 2nd floor) twice a month on Wednesdays starting at 6pm.

Training evenings on Spring 2026:

• Wed 4th February: Psycho-social first aid
• Wed 18th February: First aid
• Tue 3rd March: Joined exercise with Finnish first aid group
• Wed 18th March: First aid
• Wed 1st April: 72 hours preparedness
• Wed 15th April: Psycho-social first aid  
• Wed 29th April: First aid
• Wed 13th May: Voluntary rescue service (Vapepa)
• Wed 27th May: First aid

Catering group practices preparing food for large amounts of people. Group works both in Finnish and English. The training evenings are in Tampuri (Otavalankatu 12 A, 1st floor) twice a month on Wednesdays at 5.30 pm.

New volunteers can join the group on these training evenings:

• Wed 28th January at 5.30 pm
• Wed 25th February at 5.30 pm
• Wed 25th March at 5.30 pm

The Oma Punainen Risti group for Catering Group is for those who have already participated. So please don't send join request until you have participated group at least once.

Language Cafés are organized in four different city areas starting. In Language Cafés, practicing Finnish happens through small group discussions and coffee breaks. 

• Tesoma Language Café on Mondays from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm at Tesoma well-being center in the Into room, next to the library, Tesomankatu 4
• Hervanta Language Café on Mondays from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm at community center L8, Hermiankatu 3  
• Lielahti Language Café on Wednesdays from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm at Lielahti library and Sarastus room, Antti Possin kuja 1
• City Center Language Café on Thursdays from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm at Tampuri, Otavalankatu 12 A, 2nd floor.

The Tampere Branch organizes beginner-level Finnish language courses at the Tampuri in city center, in Hervanta and Lielahti.

In the Finnish language course, studies begin from the very basics. The group progresses at a slow pace and focuses especially on practicing everyday vocabulary. The course covers both Finnish grammar and vocabulary. Teaching methods include written and spoken tasks and exercises, as well as group discussions. English is used as a support language, but knowledge of English is not required.
