Maahanmuuttajan tuki / Metsälä Detention Centre

The Helsinki detention unit is a closed area which the detained persons cannot leave. They may stay there from a few hours to many months. The decision to detain a person is made by the police or the Border Guard. Some are migrants held by a court order awaiting removal from the country. During the visits the Red Cross volunteers offer social and emotional support to the detainees. They actively chat or listen to the detainees’ stories, and play board games bringing a welcome break to an often challenging situation.

Volunteering with the group requires completion of a specific training course, long-term commitment, and ability to cope and function in a challenging environment.

Time:  Thursdays, 6-8 pm

Helsingin vastaanottokeskuksen Punavuoren toimipiste on Maahanmuuttoviraston ylläpitämä aikuisten ja perheiden transit-keskus,  joka on tarkoitettu ensisijaisesti uusille maahan tulleille turvapaikanhakijoille. Kun turvapaikanhakija on käynyt turvapaikkapuhuttelussa, hänet siirretään toiseen keskukseen odottamaan päätöstä.


The Helsinki Reception Centre's Punavuori unit is a transit centre for adults and families maintained by the Finnish Immigration Service, which is primarily intended for newly arrived asylum seekers. After an asylum seeker has had an asylum interview, he or she is transferred to another centre to await a decision.

The coordinator of the action group will familiarize you with the group activities and review the instructions in a short interview. It is essential to commit to the principles of the Red Cross.
